HERO OF HOPE
On March 25, 2002 during a visit to the pediatrician for a recurrent ear infection, our life turned upside down with 3 little words: “Brandon has leukemia”. Brandon, then 5 years 11 months, needed to be hospitalized immediately and was sent by ambulance to Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia (CHOP). He began treatment the very next day. Over the next 3 years and 3 months, he received continuous chemotherapy treatment as well as 2 weeks of cranial radiation to treat his high-risk Acute Lymphocytic Leukemia. Brandon’s courage and strength during his treatment were incredible and he never complained or asked “why him”. He just took one day at a time and was so brave during all the medicine doses, needle sticks, blood work, exams, tests, etc. His strength and acceptance of his illness is what allowed us as parents to cope with the reality of what was happening – he is truly an amazing boy who will forever be our hero!
While he is now off treatment and doing well, his life-saving treatment is not without consequences. The same treatment that saved his life at such a young age will never be far from our minds since it has left Brandon with severe growth delay that needs to be medically supplemented as well as complex cognitive late effects that make school/learning difficult.
Our journey has been full of ups and downs but we are one of the lucky ones – our son is a survivor and everything else is just another twist in the roller coaster ride we call life.
